A woman was seriously hurt in a two-car accident this morning when a Ford Super Duty pickup truck landed on her small compact car. The incident occurred at around 6:45 a.m. on southbound Highway 101, south of La Cumbre Road.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene to find both vehicles on the right shoulder. They came to rest with one on top of the other. Each vehicle carried one occupant.

Before the Santa Barbara Fire Department responded, a city police officer rendered first aid to the small car’s female occupant. She was then removed, stabilized, and transported to the Cottage Hospital Trauma Center in serious condition.

City Fire personnel then worked to extricate the male driver from his truck. The operation was complex and difficult as the vehicle was close to 8 feet off the ground and very unstable. Firefighters on ladders used the Jaws of Life to reach the man, who was taken to Cottage Hospital in fair condition.

The CHP was on the scene and is conducting an investigation.
