Le Petit Protest Frontman Forms New Band
When the music of Lompoc comes to mind, do you perhaps think of guitar-driven, Shins-like compositions, plaintive vocals, or acoustic covers of Madonna?
If you answered in the affirmative to any of those, chances are you are familiar with area music mogul Randall Sena, whose latest incarnation, Millions, caught our ear with “Slow Dance,” a heavy, haunting track that juxtaposes Sena’s light and genial voice with thick synthesizers and electronic percussion.
The song seems to be a marked departure from Sena’s previous work with Le Petit Protest, a former project that was scrapped and returned due to his dissatisfaction with their live show. “I really hate seeing sloppy bands,” he told me via email, “so I held off on going forward with Le Petit Protest ’til I could figure out a way to sound the way I wanted to sound.”
Sena’s readiness to reinvent himself is only the beginning of his musical merits: He is also the founder of a commercial recording studio called Certain Sparks, which is responsible for recent successes from artists like oso, Emily Wryn, Chris Wilson, and the like-minded winners of the Downtown Sound Battle of the Bands, Saint Anne’s Place.
Sena’s ear for arrangement will undoubtedly continue to influence our little S.B.-area sound behind the scenes, but in truth, it should come as no surprise if his skills onstage and in the studio one day lead him to sweeter springs. Visit facebook.com/millions.songs.
