One of the 30 men named in the city’s proposed gang injunction was sentenced Monday morning to eight years in state prison.

Marcos Ramos, 33 years old and an alleged Westside Projects gang member, was convicted by a Santa Barbara jury in July of possession of a firearm by a felon and possessing ammunition. He was arrested in February 2010 at 33 ½ Parker Way, after police received a call of trespassing.

Ramos — who has served two prior prison sentences — and another man were found in a vacant apartment, where officers testified to finding a bag out in the hallway that contained a Browning .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun. The defense argued the prosecution didn’t prove Ramos knew the bag’s contents. The jury was hung on a drug possession charge and found Ramos not guilty of possessing a controlled substance with a firearm.

After Monday’s sentencing — Ramos received the maximum prison term possible — with Judge Frank Ochoa, prosecutor Hans Almgren dropped two pending cases against Ramos, one a weapons possession and the other an allegation related to vandalism and drinking alcohol in Santa Barbara County Jail.

Ramos is one of several of the 30 alleged gang members named in the city’s proposed injunction who sits behind bars. The injunction is set to go to trial early next year.
