Chumash Tribal Chairman Vincent Armenta presented a list of thousands of signatures to the Board of Supervisors on 12/6 which he said was a show of support for the 1,400 acres of land the Chumash bought from Fess Parker last year to be brought into the tribe’s reservation.

The Chumash are pushing for a federal legislative process known as a fee-to-trust. Rep. Elton Gallegly has said he would not introduce such legislation unless it had the support of all local jurisdictions, and it isn’t clear the board would indeed okay the idea. The Chumash have said they wish to build housing for tribal members on parts of the land.
