Members of Santa Barbara’s Planning Commission gave a unanimous nod last week to the Parks and Recreation Department to install permanent sidewalk and fencing around the chunk of Shoreline Park that eroded into the ocean in 2008.

Parks and Rec will also fence off the lookout area of MacGillivray Point — named after the late mayor Don MacGillivray, who oversaw the park’s purchase in 1967 — after learning from a city-hired geologist that the point is in danger of similarly collapsing.

The project will begin in April and take about 10 weeks, officials said. It’ll cost $237,000, the majority of which will come from the city’s general fund. Planning commissioners, responding to community concern and requests from MacGillivray’s family members, directed staff to find a new site in Shoreline Park to commemorate MacGillivray.
