TOP SPORTING EVENTS: FEBRUARY 3-15

THRILLER III: In their first meeting of the basketball season, Santa Barbara High’s Dons and the San Marcos Royals went through two overtime periods at SBCC before the Dons prevailed, 73-71. Last week, Santa Barbara’s J.R. Richards Gym was packed for the rematch. The crowd was not disappointed, as the Royals rallied from a 15-point deficit and had a chance to send the game into overtime at the free-throw line, but the fans created such a din that it seemed to jar the ball out of the hoop. The Dons won again, 40-38. The teams will meet for the third time tonight (Fri., Feb. 3) at San Marcos, and the game is expected to be sold out in advance. Tickets went on sale Wednesday at both schools.

LEGEND OF THE DOME: Erin (Alexander) Brown of Santa Ynez was one of the greatest sharpshooters ever to wear a UCSB uniform. She sank 233 three-point baskets in her career, a school record that has stood for 15 years. Alexander was the top scorer for the team that went to the 1997 NCAA women’s tournament, beginning an era of nine consecutive Big Dance appearances by the Gauchos. She will be honored as UCSB’s latest Legend of the Dome at Saturday afternoon’s Big West game between the Gaucho women and Cal Poly. At 6 p.m. Saturday, the Gaucho men play at Cal State Fullerton in a game that will be televised on ESPNU.

WOMEN’S SPORTS LUNCHEON: Hundreds of athletes, coaches and supporters will attend the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s luncheon celebrating National Women & Girls in Sports on Monday at Earl Warren Showgrounds. The featured speaker will be Cal State Fullerton golf coach Pearl Sinn-Bonanni, a former U.S. Women’s Amateur champion.
