Assistance League Event for Foster Youth

The day is designed to teach these youth the skills they will need to make their own way in the world when they emancipate. These are youth who have been in the system for all or most of their lives. They have not had the stability of a home where they are able to learn what will be necessary to live independently.

The event will have 17 booths, staffed with community volunteers and also professionals in their respective fields. The youth will learn how to secure housing for themselves, fill out a job application and they will do a mock interview. They will learn how to open a bank account, have representation from the utility companies, credit counseling where they will learn how to budget their money, and a grocery store for them to practice shopping for meals.

There will be a booth for those considering college with representatives from UCSB, SBCC, Hancock College and the Scholarship Foundation. We will have representatives from vocational schools as well as three branches of the military.

There will be a courthouse with Judge Frank Ochoa presiding where they will learn the consequences of breaking the law. There will be a Day Care Center where they will learn the responsibilities and cost of raising children and a Health Care Center with information on health and dental care.
