Enter the 4th Annual Los Alamos Dog Races

Summer is here, which means it’s once again time for the Los Alamos Dog Races and Festival, this year celebrating it’s fourth annual incarnation on July 7, starting at 3:30 p.m. All are encouraged to bring their dogs down to the race, which is billed as an event for people of all ages, designed to bring back memories of an old fashioned Fourth of July celebration.

Included in the evening of festivities are a best trick competition and a costume contest, and the races started at 6 p.m. Anyone can register his or her dog to race before the event for $10 and at the event for $15.

The divisions for each race are determined by dog height, and dogs that finish in the top three places receive prizes, and all receive a bag of treats. In what’s a reliably entertaining spectacle, the winner is less determined by speed than each dog’s capability to run in a straight line toward the finish.

All of the profits from the annual event benefit the Coast Valleys Pony Club, an organization that teaches youth how to enjoy equestrian activities, play mounted sports, and care for horses and ponies, thereby developing responsibility, moral judgment, leadership, and self-confidence.
