Summer brings warm weather, sunny days, and lazy days on the water, in the water or at the beach. The worst enemies of hearing aids are increased humidity in the air, sand/dirt, moisture from body sweat, and accidental falls into swimming pools or the ocean. Extra precautions should be taken with increased outdoor activities, even mowing the lawn.
Moisture can be a major cause for many hearing aid-related problems. Humidity and sweat can cause distortion, static and many other problems. You can help avoid the cost and time of manufacturer repair by employing some of these tips for hearing aid maintenance and protection.
Each night wipe down the aid with a soft cloth.
Inspect the receiver port (the small opening that sends the sound into your ear) and the microphone (the small opening on the faceplate that receives the sound) daily for the accumulation of any debris. If there is debris, remove it with the hearing aid tools
Avoid getting the hearing aid wet.
Do not apply hair care products directly on the hearing aid.
Purchase a dehumidifier kit to assist with eliminating moisture.
Open the battery door at night to allow air to circulate and dry the hearing aid.
If you perspire heavily during summer activities, take a moment to remove your hearing aids and wipe off excess moisture with a soft cloth.
Do not leave your hearing aids in direct sunlight.
Avoid leaving your hearing aids in glove compartments or similar environments.
Remove your hearing aids to mow the lawn but be sure to wear ear plugs!
If you follow these maintenance guidelines daily, you may prevent costly repairs and ensure that your hearing aids work throughout the summer months and beyond.
