Law enforcement officials examine a fatal two-vehicle accident at Dominion and Foxen Canyon roads east of Santa Maria involving a late model Honda and a Cadillac Escalade. Three people were involved, one was killed and the other two reportedly have minor to moderate injuries.

A man who ran a stop sign and was killed in a July vehicle collision with the wife of congressional candidate Abel Maldonado was under the influence of methamphetamine, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Joseph Scheurn, 32, had enough meth in his system to be considered driving under the influence when he failed to stop at a stop sign and was hit by Laura Maldonado driving in a Cadillac Escalade. She and her son were taken to the hospital but released the same day.

CHP officers will file a supplemental report to the incident, but the revelation will not change anything else related to the crash, which occurred in the afternoon of July 23.

Maldonado was driving on Foxen Canyon Road, which does not have a stop sign, while Scheurn approached northbound on Dominion Road. He didn’t stop, instead traveling “directly into the path” of Maldonado, who was driving at the speed limit, according to the CHP.

The front of her car plowed into the left side of his, and both ended up in an irrigation canal along Foxen Canyon Road.
