“Untitled” (2008), obsidian on canvas over panel, by Mark Hagen, at the S.B. Contemporary Arts Forum.

A Handful of Dust at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum: This group show of contemporary sculpture brings together seven artists who take inspiration from the imagery of archaeological digs and ethnographic field research. Exhibition curator Laura Fried chose participating artists Mark Hagen, Jay Heikes, Matt Hoyt, Erin Shirreff, Ricky Swallow, Zin Taylor, and Allyson Vieira because she feels that they all use sculpture to “craft a material vernacular at once ancient and contemporary.” Along with the “expected unexpected,” like cool tools that you can’t quite recognize, hip neo-primitive arrowheads, and other enigmatic artificial artifacts, there’s likely to be the “unexpected unexpected.” The latter category is where you might find Swallow’s dead-on cubist bronze guitars and binders, or Vieira’s hilariously deadpan drawings of paper cup towers. Shows Sunday, January 27 to Sunday, March 24. Call (805) 966-5373 or visit sbcaf.org.
