Leadership Goes to the Chickens
Over the next 90 days, the 2013 Leadership Class will raise $4,000 to pay for the materials for a larger coop, and will design and build the new coop.
With plans to expand its educational programs, the old chicken coop must make way for a new one that will be larger and gives visiting children a better opportunity to view the behind-the-scenes workings of raising chickens. Each year over 15,000 children from schools all over Santa Barbara and Goleta come to the farm on field trips, learning about the crops and the animals. The new and improved chicken coop is to have space for a greater number of chickens, and larger nesting and roosting areas. It will also include an indoor boardwalk, allowing children the opportunity to study where the chickens spend their nights and lay eggs.
With a new chicken coop, Fairview Gardens will be able to expand their programs, and educate a greater population of community members and children. The grand unveiling of this project will be at its location on North Fairview Avenue on May 10, 2013. To follow this project on Twitter follow the hashtags #leadsb and #sbchickcoop.
