Enjoying Midtown Manhattan

International Barclay, Ice Skating, Shopping, and More

There really is nothing out West to compare to New York City. Manhattan is a 24-mile long monument to the success of commerce in the U.S. From the Broadway shows to shopping on Park Avenue, New York offers the best of everything. It is a surprisingly easy place to navigate if you set yourself up right.

There are countless reasons to visit the Big Apple. Our reasons on a recent visit included ice skating, shopping, and taking in the sights and sounds of our nation’s most vibrant city. The Intercontinental Barclay is a luxury property located in Midtown and within walking distance of most of the activities we were planning.

As they say in the property business, “location, location, location.” Well, Midtown has this and a lot more. Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall, Times Square, and 5th Avenue shopping are all just a few blocks walk from the hotel. And I forgot to mention Grand Central Station, the Broadway theatre district, and the Museum of Modern Art — all, again, just a few minutes of walking away. There is something for everyone, including children.

The Barclay

They built hotels in the 1920s that will never be duplicated. The grandeur of the lobbies and overall quality of construction is priceless. Nothing is better than to have this structure with all the amenities of modern day life. That is exactly what the Intercontinental New York Barclay offers guests with Tennessee marble floors and Tiffany-style skylights in many common areas. Built in 1926 and funded by the Vanderbilt family, the hotel has long been popular with the Ivy League New York crowd.

The rooms are designed with an elegant residential style and include all the high-tech conveniences you might expect. LED HDTV, dual line phones, iHome radio, iPhone docs, and high-speed Internet are some examples. The comfortable bedding includes all-cotton linens and soft down pillows. Most of the rooms are on the large side, which is not always the case these days.

The Barclay Bar and Grill is located just off the lobby and very popular with well-heeled locals. Chef Serge Devesa has created a menu true to his heritage in the South of France. The Continental cuisine is made up of the freshest ingredients to make for a light and healthy dining experience. The adjoining bar area is perfect for unwinding at the end of the day or after dinner. Visit IntercontinentalBarclay.com for compete details.

Ice Skating, Shopping and the Theatre

A nice clear winter day is perfect for ice skating. There are two great spots for this close to the Barclay. Rockefeller Center has perhaps the most famous rink and is just a few steps away. The setting is very inspiring and full of life as the huge buildings rise above the rink and ever-present crowds watch your moves.

A bit further but not too far is the Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park. This is even more scenic with the nature of Central Park giving way to the luxury high-rise properties of the upper east and west sides.

The best shopping in the world can be found again within steps of The Barclay. Saks 5th Avenue, Macy’s, and every famous retailer can be found on Madison and 5th avenues. If you can’t find it here, it probably does not exist.

If Broadway shows are your thing, The Book of Mormon, Rock of Ages, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and Once are all critics’ picks. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, The Lion King, and Annie are popular with families. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof stars Scarlett Johansson, and Cicely Tyson returns in The Trip to Bountiful.

Getting There

Most travelers from the West Coast will land at JFK International Airport. There is absolutely no reason to have a car in Manhattan. Once again we enjoyed a ride in and back with ExecuCar on this trip. ExecuCar is the high-end subsidiary of Super Shuttle. The service is tops among airport sedan service with the added feature of having a fleet of SUVs. This really comes in handy if you are traveling with the family. The company’s driver will meet you at baggage claim and make your trip to the hotel effortless. For more information, visit ExecuCar.com.
