Three Distinguished Poets to Discuss Poetry

The speakers include: Chryss Yost, the newly named Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara; Phil Taggart, Ventura County poet and organizer of many poetry events throughout the area; and, Perie Longo, a former Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara. Each of the speakers will also read samples of poetry.
The poetry discussion begins at 1PM and will be followed by the presentation of the winners from the 12th Annual Ventura County Writers Club Poetry Contest. “A Celebration of Days” is a daylong event of author readings, poetry recitations, songwriters performing, a children’s creative workshop, a Book Fair of regional authors and more. The entire event runs from 10 am to 5 pm and is free to the public.
About the poets:
Chryss Yost is the current poet laureate of Santa Barbara. She is an award-winning poet and author of two chapbooks. She is a co-editor of “California Poetry: From the Gold Rush to the Present” and “Poetry Daily: A Year of Poems for the World’s Most Popular Poetry Website.” She works as an artist at UCSB Library and is the host of Library Radio on KCSB.
Phil Taggart is co-editor, with Marsha de la O, of the “Askew” poetry journal and Adders Tongue Press. Phil’s first book of poems, “Opium Wars,” was published by Mille Grazie Press. His new book of poems, “Rick Sings,” will be out in May and is published by Brandenburg Press.
Perie Longo, Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara (2007-09), is considered one of the area’s most acclaimed poets. Ms. Longo has written three books of poetry: “The Privacy of Wind,” “Milking the Earth,” and “With Nothing Behind but Sky: A Journey through Grief.” Her poems have been published in journals and anthologies such as “Atlantic Review, ” “California Quarterly,” “Connecticut Review,” “International Poetry Review,” “Nimrod,” “The Paterson Literary Review,” “Prairie Schooner,” “Passage,” “Rattle,” “Solo Novo,” and “Wisconsin Review.” She has received two Pushcart prize nominations for her poetry: from “Rattle” in 2002 and “Solo Novo” in 2012. She has been featured on the Charles Osgood radio show as well as The Huffington Post.
