Naive Notion
Nick Welsh’s diatribe against Israel is counterproductive and ill-informed. He falls prey to the naive notion that if the United States didn’t support Israel then the attacks in Boston wouldn’t have happened. Like any country, Israel has its problems, but nevertheless it remains a beacon of democracy in the rough neighborhood of thugs like Iran and Syria. It’s ironic that many Bostonians, upon having their city in lockdown, commented, “Now we know what it must be like to live in Tel Aviv.”
Secondly, he suggests that Israeli politics really are like Nazism but we just shouldn’t say that because it’s a “conversation killer.” Perhaps Mr. Welsh should visit our local Jewish Federation or the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles to get a clearer picture of what happened in Nazi Germany. The Nazis systematically slaughtered millions of Jews, homosexuals, gypsies, and political enemies. Israel is defending its borders and targeting known terrorists who launch rockets or ignite bombs in schools, buses, and other public areas of Israel.
Many of us want a peaceful two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians. Welsh’s article unfortunately does not further the cause.
