Forest Whitaker portrays Cecil Gaines in Lee Daniels' <em>The Butler</em>. The actor will be honored by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on December 15.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) has announced Forest Whitaker as its 2013 recipient of the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film. The actor will be honored in a black-tie gala at the Bacara Resort & Spa on Sunday, December 15.

Most recently Whitaker appeared in Lee Daniels’ The Butler, where he starred as Cecil Gaines, a White House servant who worked through eight presidencies. Whitaker’s other filmic credits include The Last Stand, Where the Wild Things Are, The Great Debators, Panic Room, The Crying Game, Good Morning, Vietnam, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, among many others.

Whitaker will be the eighth actor to receive SBIFF’s Kirk Douglas Award, joining the ranks of Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Harrison Ford, Quentin Tarantino, Ed Harris, John Travolta, and Kirk Douglas himself.
