Hike the Cold Spring Trail Loop in Santa Barbara on Sunday, April 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon with Ojai herbalist-naturalist Lanny Kaufer and experience a great diversity of plants from the sunny chaparral to the shady creekside habitat. If the fog clears, expect spectacular views from the top of the loop. This round-trip hike covers 1.8 miles and gains 682 feet in elevation. The group will take it slow and stop often to identify and discuss the plants. On a recent visit Kaufer identified 6 species of native trees, over 40 species of native plants, and 5 species of native ferns. The variety of habitats and microclimates is exceptional.

On this hike, Kaufer will demonstrate and discuss the many uses of wild plants by traditional Chumash and modern herbalists alike. Poisonous plants will also be identified. Trailside discussion will include the difference between native and naturalized plants, humankind’s role in the ecological balance, sustainable harvesting, and other topics generated by the participants.

Lanny Kaufer has been leading informative and entertaining Herb Walks in Southern California since 1976 for groups of all ages. His expertise is in edible and medicinal uses of indigenous and naturalized plants. Lanny acquired much of his knowledge in field study with well-known herbalists and ethnobotanists. He studied with the late William LeSassier and has co-led workshops and expeditions with noted herbalists such as the late Chumash plant expert Juanita Centeno, the late Michael Moore, Michael Tierra, Amanda McQuade Crawford, Dr. Fred Siciliano, Dr. James Adams, and Chumash educator Julie Tumamait.

The cost is $25 for adults, $20 for seniors 62 and older, and $20 for full-time students. Kids 5-12 can go free with an adult by prior arrangement. Toddlers must be carried in a backpack. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No dogs, please.
