Get to Know Lucy Langlas

Name: Lucy Langlas

Did you have other projects before starting the solo thing? I used to play in an all-girl garage rock band with my sister and close friend.

If you had to describe your sound in three words, what would they be? Maybe something like dream-story folk.

What was the first record you purchased? I’m not sure what the very first one was, but Bob Marley’s Legend was an early one that had a big impact.

What was the first concert you attended? Jimmy Cliff! It was awesome.

Was there a band/artist that made you want to pursue music? Any time I saw any live music as a kid, it had a huge impact on me, especially kids from my hometown in Montana that played music.

What’s the last song that made you cry? I listen to Joe Pug on my playlist a lot. That always makes me kind of cry — songs like “I Do My Father’s Drugs” and “Bury Me Far (From My Uniform).”

If we went through your music collection, what’s the strangest thing we’d find? My physical collection of music is mostly jazz.

If you could write a song with anyone, living or dead, who would it be? Jack White, Thom Yorke, Johnny Cash

What’s the one song you wish you had written? Maybe “All Along the Watchtower,” just because everyone likes to play it. It feels a bit dangerous.

What’s your proudest Santa Barbara music-scene moment? It was fun having a track in the Santa Barbara Film Festival in the movie Falcon Song. Also opening for Donavon Frankenreiter and writing songs at the beach at night.

Favorite album of 2014 (so far)? There are a lot of beautiful albums out this year. I like Warpaint by Warpaint, also Angel Olsen, Mirah, Sylvan Esso.
