The City Council has budgeted roughly $100,000 — out of $250,000 designated for the overall project — to study how “directional signs” strewn throughout Santa Barbara can better guide residents and visitors to destinations of interest, such as the Mission or various museums. In recent months, City Hall has also embarked upon a street sign makeover in hopes of making them more friendly to tourists easily confused by street names like Castillo, Carrillo, and Cabrillo. The new study will focus not on street names but destination guidance. How many new signs this means — and how much the total project will cost — has yet to be determined.
