The small, peaked rooftops cropping up from behind the sound wall along northbound Highway 101 near Milpas St. are part of a 40-unit development of affordable rentals on the site of a once-derelict lower Eastside mobile home park. Located on Punta Gorda St., the prefabricated two-bedroom units — each about 550 square feet — will come with a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, one parking spot, and noise-dampening insulation, and will be priced between $1,500 and $1,800 a month, according to Jan Hochhauser, the project’s architect. Because the 1.4-acre property sits in the Sycamore Creek floodplain, each home will be elevated about three feet off the ground by its concrete foundation. Hochhauser estimates the rentals will be on the market early next year.
