Ringworm Caused Outbreak at Santa Maria Animal Center

Ringworm caused the recent disease outbreak affecting dogs and people at the Santa Maria Animal Center, according to test results from the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department. Those volunteers and staff members suffering from the itchy rash that accompanies the disease have been referred to their doctors for treatment, and county health officials say fungal infections like ringworm are easily cured.

Among other measures, the shelter has quarantined its dog kennels, provided protective clothing for volunteers and staff members, given anti-fungal dip treatment to both affected and at-risk dogs, and temporarily suspended spay and neuter vaccination clinics, according to a press release from the county’s public health department. The shelter also notified Santa Maria and Lompoc animal rescue organizations and people who recently adopted dogs from Animal Services.

At this time, pet owners are reminded to license their animal so their pet, if lost, will not have to stay at the Santa Maria Animal Center.
