There’s more to Prop. 64 than just legalizing recreational pot smoking. If passed, it would open the doors to the legalization of hemp farming, which our nation could greatly benefit from during these hard economic times.

The seeds from extremely low or non-THC hemp can be used as a highly nutritious food product, and it makes an excellent non-dairy milk. Hemp can also be used for paper (save the trees), clothing, biofuel, and many other applications, including use as a filler to strengthen building materials. Sure, we can get these products from countries where hemp farming is legal, but it is very expensive to import. There’s no need for hemp products to be outrageously expensive since hemp is one of the easiest crops to grow. Incidentally, it actually benefits the soil, so other crops could be rotated with it

There has been speculation that pot laws were originally sparked by the nylon industry lobby to keep industrial hemp out of the picture. Like many other things, it seems to be all about where the money flows. But now it’s time to end the absurdity and bring on a multitude of inexpensive hemp products that could boost the economy and make life better for millions of people. Please vote yes on 64.
