Isla Vista Resident Arrested for Planting Hidden Cameras in Bathroom

[Update: Feb. 18, 3:30 p.m.] UCSB students have been taking to Twitter to share their experiences with hidden recording devices following the announcement that UCSB student and Associated Students member Justin Asinobi had been arrested for allegedly placing hidden recording devices in everyday items and placing them in a victim’s bathroom.

Up until news of his arrest broke on Wednesday, Asinobi had been a minor celebrity at the college, a fourth-year chemistry student serving as the disability community public relations officer for the Commission on Disability Equality (CODE) for the Associated Students at UCSB, as reported by the Daily Nexus. Asinobi was also known through his Twitter account, @jadedjustin___, where he called himself “mr.bitches.” His Twitter account was reportedly popular among UCSB students, and many users wrote about recognizing Asinobi on campus due to this account. The Daily Nexus also reported that CODE is seeking to terminate Asinobi’s position from their executive board, calling his actions “egregiously misogynistic and profoundly appalling.”

UCSB’s External Vice President for Local Affairs Shannon Sweeney released a statement on February 16 acknowledging the incident and providing some counseling resources for students who may have been affected.

It is unclear at this time what the university’s role will be in responding to this incident, or if there will be a search of the campus for any more hidden cameras, including in the library or in the more than 70 all-gender restrooms on campus. UCSB has not responded to the Independent’s request for comment, but this story will be updated as more information becomes available.

[Original Story] The Isla Vista Foot Patrol arrested a suspect on Tuesday for allegedly placing hidden cameras in the bathroom of a victim’s home in Isla Vista.

Foot patrol deputies identified the suspect as 21-year-old Justin Asinobi of Isla Vista. After deputies contacted Asinobi at his residence, they recovered several recording devices they believe were used to record victims without their knowledge. 

Asinobi was arrested on February 15 and booked at the Main Jail for invasion of privacy by means of an electronic device and eavesdropping. He is being held with an enhanced bail of $400,000. Sheriff’s deputies are continuing this investigation and will be attempting to identify and contact additional victims.
