“I’m not looking to get into Oprah’s book club,” explained Polly Frost, the self-described erotic sci-fi and horror author whose X-rated comedy soap opera, Sex Scenes, has been making a splash at readings in New York City, “I love raw, pulpy stuff.” On December 28, Santa Barbara’s cooperative winery and tasting room, Cellar 205, will host a live reading of Frost’s Sex Scenes, transforming the Funk Zone into an erogenous zone.

StompRocket’s Bid for the Big Time

For nearly 10 years, S.B.’s genre-bending pop/metal/alternative group StompRocket has been working toward the daunting goal of being a successful band-recording songs and doing shows-but never scoring a major label deal. But now the group is one of five finalists in a competition on the Web site garageband.com. In less than a week, the results of what could be a make-or-break competition for the band will be announced.

Upon arriving at The Hard to Find Showspace-located at an unlit church at the darker end of Hollister Avenue-a line of silhouettes has already formed around the edges of the parking lot that Wednesday night. Eager to see Xiu Xiu’s melancholy in the making, the flock of hipsters had migrated to The Space for the venue’s final show ever (or so they say).
