An alternate idea to speed bumps would be the placement of K-rails at every mid-block where the current inoperative traffic-signal-controlled crosswalk is located.
Why not have select SBPD officers on a few e-bikes to chase down and cite teen offenders barreling down State Street?
The plan divides downtown State Street into five separate districts, some with one way traffic, some with no cars, some with two way traffic, some with bikes, some with speed restrictions on bikes, some with pedicabs and golf carts, some with “pedlets.”
There is no “Promenade,” only a closed street where pedestrians move along the sidewalks and free-range wheeled vehicles dominate the pavement.
People gathered on the patios of nearby restaurants, hung out on benches, sat on curbs, and danced in the street.
We walk through, looking for what we’ve known to have been there, only to find those places are gone. I miss State Street.
The advice of Charles Fletcher Lummis for Santa Barbara should be heeded today as the character of this graceful city is at stake on lower State.
May I immodestly suggest that the only vibration of any relevance on Earth 1 is the stimulation of vibrating cash registers ringing up sales of goods and services.
COVID was lifted and State Street should be re-opened.
