The Monarchs of Ellwood

The Sperling Preserve at Ellwood Mesa is home to one of the largest monarch butterfly over-wintering sites in California and is well worth a visit this holiday season.

Surf’s Up and That’s Great

On a warm Tuesday afternoon, surfers and beach goers descended on local beaches as the waves began to kick up. This may be the first major storm of the year.

Lower Oso Single Track

This is a short trail, which follows the left side of the road leading to Upper Oso and provides either a short and scenic day ride or a way to and from Upper Oso without having to ride on the road.

Los Olivos Metric

Combining the Santa Ynez, Lompoc, and Los Alamos valleys, this century ride provides an ultimate ride for those who want to experience the heart of Santa Barbara County.

Tour of the Valleys

While most of the longer valley rides of necessity include roads on both sides of Highway 101, the Buellton Metric Century is unique in that all of it is west of the highway, showcasing the scenic western part of the county.

Point Sal

Point Sal is one of my favorite places to go in the springtime when the wildflowers are in bloom. Jalama Road is perhaps the single most beautiful road in the entire valley system. In springtime its emerald green grasses and oak hillsides and canyons are magnificent, but this is an excellent ride in any season.

Casmalia Loop

Not quite a metric century, the route takes you down the entire Los Alamos Valley, through the lovely Casmalia Hills and cuts across Santa Maria into the upper Sisquoc River valley.

Cat Canyon Loop

Lots of back country roads, little traffic, beautiful countryside scenery and places to stop along the way like the quaint town of Sisquoc or the historic Foxen Canyon Chapel make this a great ride. A stop at the Rancho Sisquoc Winery will make the loop complete.
