Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara High start working this week toward another championship showdown in the CIF 1A girls volleyball playoffs. Dos Pueblos (25-2) is the top-seeded team in the division and will host San Luis Obispo in the opening round Tuesday night (Nov. 10), and second-seeded Santa Barbara (18-8) will host Notre Dame Academy. The second round will take place Thursday and the quarterfinals Saturday.

The Chargers and Dons also will represent the Channel League in the Division 1 boys water polo playoffs (starting Wednesday) and, along with San Marcos, the Division 2 girls tennis playoffs (starting Thursday). See the schedule below. Note: The time of DP’s water polo game has been changed to 12 noon. In another time change, the start of Friday night’s 50th annual football “Big Game” between Santa Barbara and San Marcos Highs has been moved up an hour to 6 p.m.

On the college front, UCSB takes on Cal State Northridge in the Big West men’s soccer tournament semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Harder Stadium. Northridge is the only team to score on the Gauchos and beat them (1-0) in conference play. UCSB blanked the Matadors 2-0 in their rematch two weeks ago. Since then, the Matadors have won three straight matches to qualify for the tournament.

Northridge forward Devin Deldo received the last Big West player of the week honor rather surprisingly leaving the Gauchos without any recognition in 2009 despite outscoring their conference foes 13-1 and clinching the regular-season title with 25 points (8-1-1) to second-place Cal Poly’s 19. Cal Poly hosts UC Irvine in the other Big West semifinal. The winners will meet for the title Saturday.

UCSB’s women continued their soccer resurgence by winning their second consecutive Big West tournament championship Sunday, coming from behind to earn a 1-1 tie at Cal Poly and then winning a penalty-kick shootout by a 5-4 score. The Gauchos, who finished third in the regular season, earned a bid to the NCAA women’s tournament. They will face BYU in the first round Thursday at Stanford.
