TOP SPORTING EVENTS: APRIL 16-26
UCSB will host two rounds of the USA Rugby Men’s and Women’s Division I Collegiate Rugby Playoffs this weekend. Matches will commence at 1 p.m. Friday and continue on Saturday and Sunday at Harder Stadium and the adjacent Storke Field. Featured teams include defending men’s champion BYU, which opens against Delaware at 7 p.m. Friday, and four-time women’s champion Stanford, which faces Northern Iowa at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The Gaucho baseball team hosts 22nd-ranked Cal State Fullerton in a three-game Big West Conference series at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. The first 250 UCSB students to show up for Saturday’s game will receive “Gunnar Shades,” sunglasses modeled after those worn by centerfielder Gunnar Terhune in a widely circulated comic video.
Other highlights of a busy sports weekend include the Santa Barbara High/Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions boys volleyball tournament; UCSB’s volleyball matches Friday and Saturday against Hawaii; and Roller Derby at Earl Warren Showgrounds on Saturday featuring Santa Barbara’s Brawlin’ Betties.
Four thousand pounds of trout have been planted for the Cachuma Lake Nature Center’s 15th annual Trout Derby on Saturday and Sunday. Register at the lake ($35 for adults, $10 for children 10 and under) to be eligible for $5,000 in cash prizes. Information: (805) 693-8381 or TroutDerby.org.
Runners will be flooding the waterfront Saturday morning in the Santa Barbara Chardonnay 10-Miler, followed by an optional wine tasting. Late registrations are being taken at the Outfooters in La Cumbre Plaza or before the start of the race at 8 a.m. at Leadbetter Beach.
