There was once a group of friends who dubbed themselves the Crunchy Psycho Fish and dedicated their time to art and drinking. Recently, they’ve (not so surprisingly) decided to be creative at a bar, which means a more or less monthly series they’ve called The Psycho Fish Comedy Experiment (and Ice Cream Social), which takes place this Sunday, April 10, at SOhO. One of the ringleaders, Ed Cavazos, says that fish and comedy go together “like fine wine and a can of Spam,” insisting the evening is about “a bunch of guys being creative—or at least trying—and throwing it all up on stage.”

Cavazos says the concept began when he wondered, “What if we took all the rules for a traditional comedy night—regular time slots, five-minute sets, openers, feature acts—and said ‘Screw it’?” The first Comedy Experiment even featured audience participation. As Cavazos recalls, “I think within the first 10 minutes we had a running gag about killing cats, [a song about] guys hitting on my sister, some jokes about oral sex …” Cavazos’s comic cohorts include cohost Jason Love (who’s most recently been touring with Comedy Central’s Craig Shoemaker), Andrey Belikov, Matt Fazio, Travis Greer, Tom McClain, Justin Testa, and Jeff Urrea. “Imagine, if you will, asking folks to sign on to crew the Titanic … and these saps did! X on the line, ‘We’re on board captain,’” Cavazos laughed. “They showed up ready to rock and do anything: no arguments about stage time, who did what, nothing! After our first show, we all got off stage, started chatting, and said, ‘You know what? That was some pretty funny stuff there.’”

It’s also important to mention the gig’s main caveat, per their promotional material: “Ice cream limited to amounts on hand, if any. Not all attendees receive ice cream. Or comedy. Or fish experiments, or other variance thereof.” So I guess that means there’s no need to bring your garden koi.

The Psycho Fish Comedy Experiment takes to SOhO this Sunday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. Call 962-7776 or visit sohosb.com for info.
