Week in Sports

The men’s volleyball showdown between UCSB and Brigham Young tonight (Thurs., Feb. 17) and Friday night has been moved to the Thunderdome from Robertson Gym because of a leaky roof at the older facility. The matches between the No. 4-ranked Gauchos (6-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, 8-5 overall) and No. 2-ranked BYU (6-2, 10-3) will begin at 7 p.m.

The Gaucho men’s basketball team defeated Cal State Fullerton 86-71 Wednesday night and will return to the Thunderdome on Saturday night for a non-conference game against Boise State. The women’s team will host Seattle University on Sunday afternoon.

Top-seeded Dos Pueblos High won its 64th consecutive girls water polo game over Canyon of Anaheim by a 19-2 score Wednesday in the first round of the CIF Division I playoffs. The Chargers will travel to Edison of Huntington Beach for a quarterfinal match Friday. Santa Barbara, a 13-2 winner over Palos Verdes, will travel to Corona del Mar. The other six teams in the quarter-finals, besides the Chargers and Dons, are in Orange County.

San Marcos and Bishop Diego won their opening-round games in the boys basketball playoffs. Both teams will hit the road Friday, the Royals to Bonita in La Verne, and the Cardinals to California Lutheran in the Riverside County town of Wildomar.

D.C. United, the Major League Soccer team that plays an exhibition against the UCSB Gauchos on Tuesday night, has signed former U.S. national team forward Charlie Davies for the coming season. Davies, who was seriously injured in a fatal car accident 16 months ago, is on loan from the French club FC Sochaux. Davies joins former UCSB star Chris Pontius in United’s forward line. Davies scored on an assist from Pontius in a 4-0 preseason victory over Trinidad and Tobago’s under-20 national team in Florida last week. Admission will be free to the match at UCSB’s Harder Stadium.
