Flying Goat Cellars Features “Harvest Horrors: Tales From the Dark Side of Winemaking”
Norm Yost and other local winemakers will share stories of past and present harvest experiences. “The harvest from hell” and “Is it over already?” are some themes that will be discussed in their storytelling. Flying Goat Cellars Tasting Room is located at 1520 East Chestnut Court, Unit A, in Lompoc.
The event is part of Flying Goat Cellars’ monthly First Thursday with Wine & Culture in the Ghetto. Fran Collin’s “Wine Ghetto Portraits” remain on exhibit from the October First Thursday. Collin is a Santa Barbara-based photographer who has a penchant for food photography, especially chefs, restaurateurs and now winemakers. His portfolio includes such luminaries as chefs Paul Bocuse, Michel Richard, Daniel Boulud, Alain Ducase, Alice Waters and Julia Child. Over a series of photo shoots last spring, Collin captured the portraits of Richard Longoria, Norm Yost, Kathy Joseph, Steve Clifton and others. Some of his photos were featured in Edible Santa Barbara last summer.
Flying Goat Cellars co-owners Norm Yost and Kate Griffith host the First Thursday events to introduce locals to the wine community and to foster camaraderie with other winemakers. “Harvest Horrors allows us a chance to sit back and reflect on challenging harvest experiences with a sense of humor and a glass of wine!” says Yost. Griffith notes that her academic studies in communication and anthropology gave her great appreciation for oral histories, especially in unique subcultures like winemaking.
Flying Goat has been hosting First Thursday with Wine & Culture in the Ghetto since May. Previous events include an art opening with plein air painter Jon Arnold, a poetry reading with James Kotsybar and Ella Gale, a book signing with nationally acclaimed speaker and coach Bill Poett, live music by Jazz Divine Duo and handcrafted oils by La Nogalera, Rancho Olivos and Clos Pepe. There is no charge for First Thursday events.
