Dons, Royals Suffer OT Defeats in Soccer


Dos Pueblos High, seeking its fifth consecutive CIF girls water polo championship, will face top-ranked Corona del Mar at 11 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 18) in a quarterfinal match at DP’s Elings Aquatic Center. The Chargers have won three straight Division 1 titles, following a Division 2 crown.

The Santa Barbara Dons, who tied the Chargers for first place in the Channel League, travel to Laguna Beach for another quarterfinal match.

San Marcos and Bishop Diego hit the road in the second round of the CIF boys basketball playoffs tonight (Fri., Feb. 17), the Royals playing Charter Oak in Covina and the Cardinals at Ribet Academy in the San Fernando Valley. Santa Barbara was knocked off by West Torrance in the first round. In girls basketball, Bishop Diego defeated Holy Family 53-28 and will host St. Margaret’s in the second round Saturday. Providence Hall makes a long trip to face Immanuel Christian in Ridgecrest. Rio Mesa eliminated Santa Barbara on Thursday, 64-50.

Cate romped to a 9-0 victory over Newbury Park Adventist in the Division 7 boys soccer playoffs, while Carptineria edged Arroyo Grande 2-1 in Division 5. Both teams will travel to their second-round games Tuesday. In Division 1, Santa Barbara and San Marcos both lost tough matches – the Dons 1-0 in overtime to Royal, the Royals falling short 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout after a scoreless tie at Los Alamitos.

In college action, UCSB opens its baseball season at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium with a four-game series against two-time national champion Oregon State, beginning Friday at 2 p.m.

Westmont College is offering free admission to its basketball games Saturday. The Warrior men, 10-5 in the Golden State Athletic Conference, have a chance to regain a share of first place when they play Concordia (11-4). Westmont’s women, the GSAC leaders, start off the double-header at 5:30 p.m. SBCC is also hosting a pair of Saturday basketball games.
