The AVP pro beach volleyball tournament is underway at Santa Barbara’s West Beach with matches between hopeful qualifiers for the main draw. At 5 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 27), the suspended men’s final of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) tournament will be completed. Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson will seek their third consecutive title against Theodore Brunner and Nick Lucena. Gibb and Patterson won the first set of the match 22-20 but were trailing in the second 10-11 when wind and heavy rains forced the suspension.

The main draw of the double-elimination tournament begins Friday. The top-seeded teams are Phil Dalhausser-Sean Rosenthal on the men’s side, and April Ross-Kerri Walsh Jennings on the women’s. They will open against the lowest seeded qualifiers at 11 a.m.

Whitney Pavlik, the former partner of Walsh Jennings, will team up with Annett Davis, not Jennifer Kessy, as reported earlier. Davis was a two-time champion in Santa Barbara (2008 and 2010) with Jenny Jordan.

There is a lot of action at UCSB this weekend. The Gaucho men’s soccer team will try to rebound from a 1-0 loss to New Mexico against Stanford, which has won four straight matches. The women’s volleyball team opens Big West play against Long Beach State and UC Irvine. There will be two soccer matches Sunday.

In prep football, the San Marcos Royals and Carpinteria Warriors, both 4-0, host non-league opponents Friday night.
