When I turned on the third season of American Idol to see William Hung destroy “She Bangs,” I knew the Latin music revolution of the late ’90s had begun its glorious swan song. Remember the darkened age of music history that brought us diet-tejano musicians like Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, and Enrique Iglesias?
REGGAE FOR A CAUSE: At 6 p.m. this Saturday evening, under the warm glow of a rising full moon, the Condor Express will set sail from the Santa Barbara Harbor, its decks and cabins filled with the sounds of sweet reggae music. And while the three-hour tour will no doubt be a party of epic proportions-with beer and wine flowing and irie smiles blowing in the wind-the voyage is about much more than the musical offerings of Cornerstone and the gathering of friends new and old.
TWANG THANG: It is no secret why artists Lyle Lovett and k.d. lang are headlining their current tour together; in terms of musical style, their compositions and creations are all over the board and the songs they craft, they craft well-very well.
DEVIL’S ADVOCATE: I’ve never been a big Incubus fan. Then again, I was never a fan of much of anything labeled industrial rock, alt metal, or even mainstream rock, for that matter. Not because I didn’t care for it, mind you, but because-growing up in the Sacramento suburbs with perfectly manicured lawns and matching minivans parked in each driveway-I didn’t exactly have access to music like that.
NO USE FOR A CLEVER TITLE: For a band to still be playing shows together after 20 years is accomplishment enough, but to still be entertaining and enjoy doing it is like climbing Mt. Everest : twice. If that’s true, then consider the punk rock band No Use For a Name mountain-climbing rock stars.
EL BUKI IS BACK: Though the feathered locks and sequined costumes of Los Bukis are long gone, the qualities that made Marco Antonio Sol-s the group’s unstoppable force-his flair for the dramatic, consummate musicianship, and dashing good looks-are alive and well.
BOYS HIT THE BOWL: Last week, the Beastie Boys vowed to inject our coastal haven with some much-needed punk-rap debauchery when they added the Santa Barbara Bowl as a stop on their summer tour.
SOhO GOES POP: Chris Barron has come a long way since bursting onto the mainstream music scene in the early ’90s as the lead singer of Spin Doctors. From being nominated for a Grammy and gracing the cover of Rolling Stone to overcoming a vocal paralysis that threatened to end his singing career, Barron has truly seen all that rock stardom has to offer.
LUCKY CHARMER: It’s rare for an artist to come along whose music entices from the very beginning. But from the moment Derren Raser‘s harmonious acoustic guitar strumming and charmingly friendly lyrics hit your eardrums, you’ll be sucked in. With a blend of indie rock and folk pop, Raser pleases the ear with catchy tunes like “Letter Never Sent” and “Crazy Crazy.”
