Shoreline Park Beach Walking

The park is long and thin, encompassing almost a mile of the bluffs just west of Santa Barbara Point. There are plenty of places for picnics and barbecues, equipment for the kids to play on, and a stairway leading down to the beach, where you can enjoy a quiet walk along the cliffs.

Santa Barbara Harbor

Walking along the edge of the harbor, listening to the sound of the sailboat lines clinking in the breeze, watching the seals lazily making their way through the channels and the boats of such varying types and sizes slowing making their way in and out is wonderful.

East Beach Walking

East Beach is quintessential Santa Barbara: wide stretches of soft, white sand, palm-lined boulevards, the red-tiled roofs of the East Beach pavilion, and one of California’s most picturesque combinations of wharf and harbor. The beach walking is good too.

Eucalyptus Lane

Hidden at the foot of San Ysidro Road, Eucalyptus Lane provides beach access both to Fernald or Hammond’s points. There are excellent tide pools, long stretches of beach, and a host of beautiful homes to enjoy.

Butterfly Beach

A delightful quarter mile long beach sits right at the foot of the Biltmore Hotel and Coral Casino. There is plenty of room to relax and enjoy the sun and surf or a walk in either direction at lower tides. The people watching is great too.

Hiking Rim to Rim of the Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon National Park slices the Colorado Desert like a deep, open wound, the Colorado River flowing freely like a severed artery. Teetering on the South Rim, I imagined the canyon’s visitors as something akin to being medically corrupt-a throng of grunge surgeons hovering above the imposing gash.

Gaviota State Park

I have always found walking along the Gaviota beach to be a wonderful experience and I try to do it at least 3-or-4 times a year, usually in the winter months when it is much less crowded. West of the pier the coastline is rocky and you won’t be able to get too far, but what you will discover as you walk to the east easily makes up for this.

Happy Canyon/Ballard Loop

The ride along Armour Ranch down into Happy Canyon is beautiful. Dotted with valley oaks and large horse breeding ranches, it is a pleasure to ride through this area in any season.

Happy Canyon

Happy Canyon is as cheerful as its name; rolling hills and tall valley oaks lead across the lower flanks of the San Rafael Mountains into this charming canyon.

Upper Romero Trail Loop

If you like great views, you’ll love this trail. The route follows Romero Road for 1.5 miles down towards until it intersects the Romero Trail, then follows this up to the top of the mountains. Though you will have a steep hike to the crest, once there you’ll feel like you are on top of the world.
