Youth Making Change
Youth Making Change (YMC) is a leadership and teen grant-making program that provides young people with the opportunity to engage directly in organized philanthropy. Each YMC Board—one meets in Santa Maria and one in Santa Barbara—distributes $15,000 in grants to youth-led projects addressing community issues and challenges that impact young people in Santa Barbara County. Since 2008, YMC teens have granted over $245,400 to local groups lead by their peers.
What YMC Board Members Do
Each YMC board member commits to be part of the board from July 2018 to May 2019. YMC members meet twice a month to build their personal and community leadership skills and carry out a grant cycle.
Members learn about philanthropy and grant-making. They discuss and analyze current issues facing young people in Santa Barbara County. Members then outreach regarding the grant cycle. Board members receive grant applications from groups led by their youth peers and review proposed projects. They conduct interviews of applicants and make decisions as a group about which projects to a. They participate in grant follow-up including grant awards and site visits.
Board members develop important leadership skills including meeting planning and facilitation, outreach and public speaking, program planning, proposal evaluation and individual and group decision-making.
