Soul Of Sand (Pairon Talle)
Directed by Sidharth Srinivasan | INDIA | 2010 | 98min | Subtitled
US FESTIVAL PREMIERE
Seemingly the antithesis of the traditional Bollywood films coming out of India, SOUL OF SAND portrays India as a country still facing issues of poverty and classism. Instead of the usual song and dance routine that pepper Bollywood productions, SOUL OF SAND centers on a man stuck in the caste system of oldchoosing to spend every day as watchman for an abandoned mine under the cruel command of his landlord. His useless role in life takes a toll on his marriage, and forces the couple into a very real struggle between following the order of the caste system and living life in the “progressive, growing” National Capital Region. SOUL OF SAND focuses on the topics that are continually plaguing India today-bureaucracy versus actual change, stagnation versus growth, and the caste system versus a social democracy, all shown through the eyes of those living in the thick of it. - Julia Speace
