Alexandra
Rating: NR
Synopsis:
Russian director Alexander Sokurovs new film situates us in the heart of a Russian battlefield. One grandmothers journey to reunite with her 27-year-old grandson Denis whom she has not seen in 7 years leads to surprising discoveries. Through observation of the soldiers routine and their schemes for an endless war, she gains new perspective on the military barracks. While we never see a battle scene, we are positioned firsthand to experience the trauma of the characters on-screen. Characteristic of Sokurovs filmic tendencies, ALEXANDRA is meant to represent not only Chechnya but every war, meditating on the psychological suffering that war produces.
