1778 Stories Of Me And My Wife

Directed by Mamoru Hoshi | JAPAN | 2011 | 140min | Subtitled
Science fiction writer Saku (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi) and bank teller Setsuko (Yuko Takeuchi) are high school sweethearts who have spent sixteen inseparable years together. When Setsuko is diagnosed with a terminal illness, the doctor advises, “Enjoy your time together. Laughter has been known to do wonders in strengthening the body’s immunities.” Saku sets out to keep Setsuko laughing and is determined to write a short story for her every day. Saku is never sure whether his writing is helping his wife, but by faithfully persisting, an act that seems absurd becomes something sacred. Kusanagi pulls off a masterfully understated and mature performance while the beautiful Takeuchi completely inhabits the gentle soul of her character. Based on a heart-rending true story of a famous science fiction writer, Taku Mayumura, and his devotion to his wife, 1778 STORIES OF ME AND MY WIFE is a tender, life-affirming love story.
