Eva Slater, a noted Hard-Edge artist and author died on May 2, 2011 after a long illness. She was born in Berlin, Germany and came to America at the end of WW2. She met her husband, scientist and inventor John Slater in New York City and they subsequently moved out west to California to raise a family. She went on to study painting in Los Angeles and became a key player in the Hard-Edge art movement of Los Angeles in the 1950’s and 60’s. In her later years she became a scholar on Native American art and wrote a defining book on Panamint Shoshone basketry. Whether she was painting or writing, she always celebrated the beautiful side of life and she will be greatly missed by those of us who were lucky enough to know her.

She is survived by her three children, Mark, Dan, and Miriam and her two grandchildren Erin and Sean Carmean.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Sara House in Santa Barbara.
