LOVERS NOT HATERS: Several local schools were recognized this
week for their commitment to eradicating hate from their hallways
and discrimination from their classrooms. In a ceremony Tuesday
evening, the local chapter of the Anti-Defamation League’s No Place
for Hate campaign honored Adams, Cleveland, and Monroe elementary
schools; Goleta, La Colina, and Santa Barbara junior high schools;
Dos Pueblos, Santa Barbara, and Santa Ynez high schools; and UCSB’s
MultiCultural Center and two residence halls for their commitment
to confronting bias. All of the schools mentioned organized at
least three activities apiece in the past year that sought to
address discrimination issues for parents, teachers, and students.
Of particular note at the ceremony was a parent workshop at
Cleveland Elementary aimed at preschool-aged children and the
Becoming an Ally program for faculty and staff at Monroe
Elementary.
