Along Came Harley

Grassroots Activist Leader Augustino to Step Down from PUEBLO

HarleyAugustino is not exactly Central Casting’s idea of a charismatic populist. Speaking before city councils, the county board, and at other public forums, he often looks a decade younger than his 27 years, earnest and dorky-looking in his inevitable T-shirt and jeans.

Immigration Reform:

Safe, Not Silly

Imagine if you will the picture of 11 million men, women, and children, all illegal immigrants, being rounded up by United States law officers, charged with felonies, and transported by buses, trains, and planes back to their country of origin.

The Old Fight

Canto General, by Mikis Theodorakis, based on the poems by Pablo Neruda. Performed by the S.B. Master Chorale, conducted by Phillip McLendon, with Teka Penteriche, contralto, and Evan Hughes, bass-baritone. At First Presbyterian Church, Saturday, April 1.

I have heard the Master Chorale perform the Canto General twice before, so you would think that I would be ready for it-but no. For the third time in a row, the piece ran over me like a steamroller. I was crying after about a dozen bars.

The City That Care Forgot

No one knows when or how New Orleans
got the nickname, “The City That Care Forgot.” Well-documented
research pins the first written acknowledgement on a tourist
brochure produced by the Federal Writer’s Program of 1938. They
seemed confident that this title was traditional.

Mostly Not

Donald Fagen

At the Arlington Theatre, Thursday, March 30.

When the curtain came up March 30 at the Arlington Theatre, Donald Fagen appeared, in all black, and ambled to center stage, seating himself behind a keyboard. He stayed there for the remainder of his no-nonsense show, working through material from his three solo albums and nailing a few Steely Dan nuggets that matched the evening’s vibe, which might be described as the Cult of Chops.

Top 5 Late Lunches

Raging Waters

If April showers really do bring May flowers, the entire South Coast will resemble a budding botanic garden by the end of the month. A curiously strong winter storm with no respect for the spring season ripped into Santa Barbara County last Sunday afternoon, bringing about record-setting rainfall, flood warnings, and generally soggy mayhem that lasted through Wednesday.

The Right Thing

Sophie Scholl: The Final Days

Julia Jentsch, Gerald Alexander Held, Fabian Hinrichs, and Johanna Gastdorf star in a film written by Fred Breinersdorfer and directed by Marc Rothemund.

I once attended a talk by a Count von Stauffenberg on the German Resistance to Hitler. Perfectly groomed and in an elegant suit, the Count sat on the edge of the table and smoked Turkish cigarettes with an ebony holder. Insofar as “resistance” was not an ironic term, he assumed that it meant the July 20 conspiracy when his second cousin, Claus Schenck von Stauffenberg, attempted to blow up Hitler-that is, the only real resistance to the Nazis arose from his class. He made no mention of the White Rose Society, nor of its martyred heroine, Sophie Scholl, whose fate is the subject of this extraordinary film by Fred Breinersdorfer and Marc Rothemund.

Tidbits 5-4-2006

“Brewing is a team sport,” said Firestone Walker’s Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. And he should know: Brynildson and Firestone Walker Brewing successfully defended their titles of Champion Brewery and Champion Brewmaster at the World Beer Cup held last month.
