UCSB hosts two events this week recognizing women authors. Beginning on Tuesday, May 8, UCSB’s lecture series of visiting speakers continues with Siobhan Brooks on Desire and the Reproduction of Race. Brooks will discuss Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital, in which sexualized desire affects racial segregation of black and Latina women. The social stratification of sex-related websites and strip clubs in New York and San Francisco were studied to determine the correlation between desire and its effects in housing, education, and sex industry jobs. The event begins at 4 p.m. at the Women’s Center Conference Room, followed by light refreshments.
The 13th annual UCSB Women’s Authors celebration begins on Thursday, May 10 at 11:30 a.m. Recently published books by 23 UCSB women authors and a light lunch will be available. UCSB Bookstore gift cards will be given away, as well as discounts on books by UCSB authors. Join Chancellor Henry T. Yang and Executive Vice Chancellor Gene Lucas at the Women’s Center Library to celebrate the achievements of UCSB’s talented writers.
