So you’re not Brazilian, you’re not one for revolutions, and you didn’t even know they speak Portuguese in Rio de Janeiro. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be celebrating the fun-loving country’s independence day on September 7, because it’s sure to be one of the more happening weeks for Santa Barbara’s healthy population of Brazilian ex-pats. Here’s how to join in on the fun:

1)As part of Santa Barbara’s official Brazil freedom bash, Pyata & Bruno and Beleza Pura will play SOhO on Friday night, September 7. Expect samba, bossanova, and choro mixed with reggae, funk, and hip-hop.

2)On September 9, at 1 p.m., there will be a Capoeira Fundraiser Party at the Ginga Multicultural Center (219 Gray St.) in the Funk Zone. See live fight-dancing as well as performances of samba and maculel.

3)If you miss the above, catch the fun the following Saturday, September 15, when Brazilian band Prakantar with Mariano Silva plays on the deck of the Condor Express as it sails the coastline. Tickets are $41, but include one caipirinha. See brazilpartyboat.com.
