A local businessman is beating the drum to save the nuns with Sisters of Bethany from being kicked out of their Nopal Street digs. The archdiocese plans to sell the property and use the proceeds to cover some of the costs of its recent $660 million settlement with 508 individuals claiming they’d been sexually victimized by archdiocesan priests. But at the same time, Tim Hale-the attorney who represented six men claiming they’d been molested by Father Matthew Kelly of Our Lady of Guadalupe, claims that one of the victim’s mothers had warned the Sisters of Bethany back in the 1950s that there was something wrong with father Kelly’s interest in her son. Had the nuns heeded this complaint, Hale charged, there would have been fewer Kelly victims. Hale said he took the deposition of one of the nuns, and that she denied ever hearing such warnings.
