Mae

Capitol Records; August 2007

Though some may argue that in the making of Singularity, Mae has finally found a tighter sound, one must also keep in mind that being easily categorized is not always a good thing. Somewhere in between the release of their original yet catchy debut, Destination: Beautiful, and now, Mae has slipped from accessible to downright average. Most of the songs strive toward a classic rock vibe, but end up blending together in a heap of fluffy lyrics and predictable chord structures. Though there are moments when their old ingenuity threatens to show through, the intriguing intro riffs eventually fall back into uninspired, emo rock. Before falling into the graveyard of the horribly mainstream, Mae needs to get back into the studio and dig up the energy and sound that made them want to start a band in the first place.
