Sigur R³s

Despite the fact that I can’t understand a word they sing, Sigur R³s once again brings to the table an otherworldly sound that gives me chills every time I listen. With lyrics sung solely in Vonlenska (the band’s made-up language based loosely on their native Icelandic), the focus here is on the music. The two-disk set was released to accompany the band’s new documentary, Heima, which follows the foursome on an unscheduled tour of their native Iceland. Hvarf, featuring five previously unreleased songs, spotlights lead singer J³n or Birgisson’s eerie falsetto on songs like “Hafs³l,” which, if you’re looking to rock out, is the track to do it to. Heim is a collection of six acoustic songs, including the all-instrumental and downright beautiful “Samskeyti” off 2002’s ( ).
