Pulp Politics

Any political issue that floats into the public consciousness brings with it a trail of journalists, academics, pundits, and cranks, all eager to make their points. They do so by writing books-lots of them-and here at The Independent, they crowd our shelves to the breaking point. For this month’s Hot Off the Press, we’ve taken a sample of the newest crop of high-profile political releases meant to push all sorts of buttons on the day’s big topics: global warming, the Middle East, socialism’s Latin American resurrection, and, of course, Tony Blair.

Lioness Euthanized at SB Zoo

Kali, an African lioness who had lived at the Santa Barbara Zoo for all but 10 weeks of her life, was euthanized Tuesday, according to zoo officials.

Ben Lee Kicks Off His National Tour at SOhO

When Ben Lee first strolled onto stage at the tender age of 14 with his band, Noise Addict, it was his ode to The Lemonheads’ Evan Dando, titled “I Wish I Was Him,” that delivered him into the greater Australian musical consciousness. Some 12 years down the road, the youthful veteran has not only established a solo career-eight albums of sublime indie pop and countless accolades later-but also a strong desire to keep it fresh and stay grounded.
