To Cork or Not to Cork

As the sole reporter at the now-legendary Paris Tasting of 1976, wine journalist George M. Taber broke the news that unknown California wines had trounced some of France’s proudest selections. When word spread, French winemakers lost their psychological grip on oenophiles everywhere. In the ensuing decades of change in the wine world, Taber’s enthusiasm for that most revered of beverages has only grown.

I pretty much live in denim and have no interest in rehabilitating my Catholic-school-caused case of Truck Driver Mouth. It’s not that I don’t have a girl card, I just choose not to flash it.

Camerata Pacifica

The woodwinds got their turn in the limelight at Friday night’s concert, which featured four pieces, including three works written for large ensembles that included multiple oboes, bassoons, and clarinets. The ebulliently sardonic John Steinmetz led both the reeds and the Adrian Spence jeering section with customary aplomb.

Your Tablas Waiting

If you need evidence that Paso Robles passes for southeastern France as a wine destination, get to a tasting with Tablas Creek Vineyard at the Wine Cask (813 Anacapa St., 966-9463) on Saturday, October 27, from noon-2 p.m. When the legendary Perrin family looked for a New World site to make Rh’ne varietals, they turned to wine importer Robert Haas for help and found a location in Paso where they hoped to make wines as good as the ones they’ve produced for decades at Ch•teau de Beaucastel.
