Which Flora to Plant Each Month

It’s cooling off and the sun isn’t lingering as long these days, but it is still a great time to sow many kinds of plants. A lot of the time we are planning only for the next season when we install something new. Here’s a nudge to get you thinking about every month of the coming year. The following plants are the all-stars, the tried-and-true performers, though there are hundreds of other choices for every season.

Special House Salad from Saigon In & Out

Gently combine all salad ingredients and arrange on a platter. To prepare the beef, combine it in a medium bowl with a little bit of sugar and salt. Heat the oil in a skillet over high heat. Add the garlic and saute until just fragrant; about 10 seconds.

The Loose Affiliation of Artists Brings Humpty Dumpty to Center Stage

Eric Bogosian’s play Humpty Dumpty starts out like any cliched horror film would: A group of vacationers go to an abandoned cabin in the woods only to find themselves locked in, with no electricity or means of communication with the outside world. However, the audience quickly finds this play contains something mostly absent from scary movies like Saw and Scream-a profound message.

The Flamenco of Javier Bar³n

Eight years in, and Flamenco Arts Festival founders and organizers Alberto Pizano and Vibiana have struck the sweet spot of performing arts programming. At the helm of one of the nation’s few annual flamenco festivals and the first in California, they attract world-class artists to a discerning audience. The performers they have brought to the Lobero stage since 2000-among them Eva Yerbabuena, Cristina Hoyos, Rafael Campallo, and Israel and Pastora Galv¡n-represent the most exciting and accomplished contemporary Spanish flamenco artists.

Pearl Oyster Bar

Why, yes, Pearl Oyster Bar is in New York, but so was I recently for one of my all-time favorite meals, the Pearl Oyster Bar lobster roll. The swimmingly fresh lobster is cooked to a tenderness that even the lobster must be happy about. Supposedly the “dressing” is mostly mayo, but if it is, there’s just the right amount with just the right amount of other accents-a squinch of lemon, a passing of a caper jar’s shadow.

Doing the Half-Century Stomp

FAIRGROUND PROFUNDITY: Late Sunday night on the Monterey Jazz Festival’s arena stage, the “colossus Sonny Rollins” (as emcee Mort Sahl introduced him) was wrapping up another robust performance, the sort he has long supplied here, starting with the inaugural event in 1958. He marveled: “Fifty years! Here’s to the next fifty years! I’ll be here.” At the end of a good Rollins set, anything seems possible.
